Construct.. Lift and Elevate

Overview :

The invention of the equipment called Lift has brought about major change in the height of  buildings. Although , the installation and erection of the  basic lift  equipment and its accessories do not fall under the scope of civil engineers , a construction person has to be fairly acquainted with the provisions for the lift.

This article brings to you the details of the lift well , lift room and lift pit.

Lift room :
This is the top most portions of the lift well. It has 2 slabs.The lower slab has a square hole in the center for passing of the steel wires from the motor up to the cabin top. The topmost slab is usually having provisions of insert plates. Monorail with hoist is suspended from these insert plates for maintenance of the motors.

Waterproofing is done for the upper slab as per the normal procedure .

Lift well:
This is rectangular in shape .RCC walls on 3 sides and the opening for lift shutters on the fourth side.
Lift well is 150 to 200 mm thick RCC wall and the internal side is just left as it is.    There is no plaster on the internal face and therefore hacking need not be done on the concrete surface  .

Form work :

The form work is usually done in plywood sides . Suitable clamping of the two sides is very much needed so that the wall shape is maintained.
Both side threaded Tie rods  are used for  clamping so that the sides do not bulge out  due to pressure of  concrete.
Tie rods are usually kept  inside a PVC sleeve so that the tie rod can be retrieved after the walls are cast.

It is suggested to keep insert plates on the left and right side walls so that the guide rails can be fixed later.
Most important aspect to be supervised in lift well is the plumb line right from lift room up to the lift pit.
This is critical since lift walls are cast floor wise and hence keeping all the wall segments in one vertical line is a challenge to the carpenters.
Concrete may have to be chipped if the vertical line is not maintained .Since there is no inside plaster and the bulged out concrete obstructs the passage of the lift.

Lift pit :
The base raft has provision of insert plates for installing the shock absorbers for the lift.
Water proofing is necessary  to avoid the seepage of sub soil water into the lift pit.
Box type water proofing is normally suggested in the pit.
