# Wood work estimate

Exercise :

You can see the sketch of a wooden door frame here.

The dimensions of the door frame and the section used are also indicated.

We need to determine the quantity of the wood that we need to buy for making of one such frame.

• Data from the sketch :
• FRAME SIZE 3’ X 7’ .
• SECTION OF WOOD : 41/2” X 61/2”.
• Bearing of the wooden frame on the masonry : 8″ on each side.
• Portion of frame below the floor level : 4″

The calculations are as follows :

• HORIZONTAL TOP MEMBER (1 NO )
• 3’+ 4 1/2”+ 41/2” + 8”+ 8” = 5’1”
• VERTICAL SIDE MEMBERS ( 2 NOS )
• 2 ( 7’ + 41/2”+ 4” ) = 7’81/2”
• VOLUME :
• (2 X 7’81/2”X 41/2” X 61/2”) + (5’1”X 41/2” X 61/2”)
• =2 X 7 X (8.5/12) X 4.5 X 6.5 /144 + 5.(1/12)X 4.5 X 6.5 /144                                                                                                   =(2 X 7.70 X 4.5 X 6.5)/144 +(5. 08X4.5X6.5)/144
• = 3.128 +1.031 =  4.16 CFT.

Thus we shall have to buy 4.16 Cubic Feet of wood/Timber from each of this wooden frame.
