Footings on common wall

Background :

The footings for the columns on the common wall need special care.

The problem is that there may be existing old construction on one side.

It is not practically possible to excavate in the other property.

The reasons could be :

  1. Since it is an old structure , the details of the footings may not be known.
  2. The property belongs to some one else, therefore we need to seek the permission from that property owner to excavate.
  3. In the future, there may be legal disputes on the ownership of the footing which has been cast in the other property.

Look at this drawing.

On the left side, there is a common wall .

[ There is an existing bungalow on the left side ]

There are various solutions to this issue.

  1. Although the stability of structural system shown in photograph is not established, except for some minor cases, but this practice is followed throughout India.
